About Philadelphia
Philadelphia is, perhaps, the most famous city in Pennsylvania - and one of the most famous around the world. Just as Philly is a city of many names, it is also a city of many and diverse people, places, and cultures. One of the most helpful sites to explore events, news, educational and cultural activities in Philadelphia is Gophila. It has many great examples of how culture is not found only in museums - although there is plenty of that! It is found on Philadelphia streets and walls.

Shining examples can be seen everyday or you can make a special tour: The Philadelphia Mural Project. The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program works with artists of diverse backgrounds and ages and involves public education and youth activitiesArtWorks!, for example, provides after school workshops to youth, ages 10 to 18 years, and the Mural Communities program "works with more than 100 communities" in the Philadelphia area.

Philly's murals are well worth the time, whether you pick up a walking tour map and make a day of it with family and friends, or take one of the five
official Philadelphia Mural Arts Tours offered every week. Each one is a great way to introduce yourself to the city. Some photos below of murals taken in the fall of 2008.

The Barnes

The Barnes is an historic site of great interest as well as a museum housing unusually eclectic and uniquely arranged collections of art, including the works of  includes Picasso, Monet, Cezanne, and Matisse. This unique arrangement of such diverse collections should be seen before The Barnes is moved to its new location on Benjamin Franklin Parkways in Philadelphia. While there has been much controversy about the move, also extensively litigated, there is no disagreement that The Barnes' collections, is something everyone should experience.  The grounds alone are beautifully manicured and maintained. There are workshops in horticulture and art as well as internships for students.  The Barnes was established by Dr. Albert Barnes in 1922 and is managed by The Barnes Foundation.
